The other evening, I walked past the Prada store on Madison Avenue, and I couldn’t help but stop to admire the delicate cotton dress that was in the window. It featured lace insets into a superfine cotton, with an almost Gatsby-esque feel. The look was romantic, and it planted a seed in my mind for romantic summer dressing, from a simpler, more innocent time.
Tonight I’m going to a concert at Lincoln Center. With the weather hot and humid again after a brief reprieve, the issue of what to wear has been nagging me. The seed planted from the Prada window keeps coming up, not for that exact dress but for the feeling it evoked. I wanted to wear something romantic, which led me to realize that I have nothing romantic in my wardrobe, which compelled me to look online for romantic summer pieces.
I’m normally a no-frills kind of dresser, though the idea of taking something more feminine and toughening it up with a black bra, as they did at Prada, or adding the wrong shoe intrigues me. It’s too late to salvage this evening's outfit, but I found some pretty things (yes, pretty!) under consideration to add a bit of romance to my wardrobe.
Here’s what I came up with.

That’s all for now. I would love to hear how you feel about romantic dressing. I’m off to the beach for a few days. I wanted to hold you over with this post, with the weekly paid post published later in the week.

Thanks for the interesting post. I think you're spot on that a romantic look doesn't have to be all frills and flouces especially if you're an older woman. I love the idea of the 'wrong shoes'. I think floaty romantic clothes look great with boots, if the weather permits. In the UK we're on the brink of another heatwave, which is not good news for a nation not geared up for this type of weather so it would have to be romance with sandals!
