This was my first Christmas in my new apartment. The thought of decorating my barely moved in apartment was a mountain I was not willing to climb. There were still plastic bins in the living room containing the hard core detritus of years of mothering and working in fashion as a designer.
A little back story; in 2019 I decided I needed a big change. I was recently divorced, my girls were in college, my career as a designer was stalled with no hope of recovery because the problem was not my work but my age. After age 50, as with many careers, it’s hard to get yourself hired despite the disclaimers all companies post about not discriminating by age, sex, race, blah blah blah. I decided I had a good run in fashion, the NYC real estate market was booming and I could comfortably quit New York with the sale of our apartment. The idea was to start clean somewhere new without the pressures of living in expensive NYC. I was not yet 60 and had no desire to retire. Travel and change would spark something new to pursue, I reasoned.
