A coat is so much more than an extra layer needed for cold weather. Just like shoes, it’s an outfit maker or breaker. Sure, coats are necessary to protect us from the elements, but don’t let their utilitarian purpose overshadow the fact that coats should be treated as the statement pieces they are. Do not miss the opportunity to add luxury, drama and high style to the drab days of winter, every time you walk out the door.
A full collection of coats is a necessity. When building a coat collection, play the long game. Look for high-quality, well-made coats in natural fibers like wool and cashmere. A good coat is an investment and like any good investment it will pay you back over the long term. Choose styles that are classic, yet distinguished with precision tailoring and attention to proportions. That’s what sets a great coat apart from an average coat. Look to brands with the design chops and tailoring know-how for the coats that will keep on serving year after year.
To start mindfully building your coat collection, first assess what you have, what you love and look forward to wearing, and what you wish you had. If you already have a gorgeous wrap coat, perhaps a more structured coat with sharp tailoring should be your next coat purchase. If all your coats are black or navy, think about adding color; like camel, tobacco or burgundy. Also, consider the clothing you most often wear and the colors you gravitate to. The coat must compliment the clothes and elevate the entire look. Think of adding a new coat every other year. In ten years you’ll have five great coats that will serve for decades. I have coats that are older than my girls (in their twenties) and still love and wear them. Not to be grim, but now when I purchase a coat I know I’ll wear it to the very end!
For this coat edit, I’ve broken it down to seven classic categories. Try to build your own coat collection spread over the different categories. Be mindful of proportions. If you have only tailored coats perhaps a more unconstructed, oversized coat would open up possibilities. Think of situations the right coat could resolve, for example: you wear lots of chunky knits in winter that are too bulky under most of your coats. This is also a good time to consider what type of coat you’ve always dreamed of having. Maybe, it’s a full length shearling or ultra chic leather trench. This edit has got you covered!
