We had a presidential campaign that attempted to bring back the joy; it didn’t work. But I predict, despite all that’s going on in the world, fashion will attempt to bring back the joy to dressing. Also, it’s no secret that luxury has been struggling with lackluster sales which will instigate a paradigm shift. We’ve had a long run of serious, safe fashion. Roomy, protective layers to hide or blend in with. Oversized menswear inspired clothes in dark tones, dominated post pandemic. Maybe the end is near. Who the hell knows? But the feeling I’m picking up on is; people want to have fun, embrace joy and recognize that life is short. Call it the life is a cabaret ethos. As the song goes, “Start by admitting from cradle to tomb, it isn’t that long a stay.” I could be dead wrong, but I can’t deny this strong feeling I have. Also I’m backed up by history and the cyclical nature of fashion. Plus the newish fannies in some of the top creative director’s seats in the business will undoubtedly spark change.
Arguably, what sparks joy in dressing is an individualistic pursuit. Perhaps the monolithic, fast-paced trend cycle will lose steam, replaced with creativity and inspiration that casts a wider net. The growing popularity of shopping secondhand is the perfect fuel for this shift. That pendulum be swinging!
I hope that 2025 will finally usher in the fashion that will define the 20’s. Historically it takes four to five years for a decade to come into its own and let’s face it, this one got off to a very rocky start. I do believe oversized minimalism has run its course for now. If this is your style and you love it, hang on to it, always do what feels good to you, but keep an open mind. Spice things up little by little to see where it takes you. The past four years have had a lot of sameness among brands and even among price ranges. When it becomes too easy to duplicate runway looks on the cheap it is definitely time for change.
Below is what’s currently inspiring me. It’s a start to define the feeling I’m going for and encouragement to be more eclectic and daring. The process is ongoing. I’ll be posting little gems of inspiration daily on Notes. I hope you’ll follow along, maybe something will resonate with you. Change is messy and exciting and it starts with a feeling. Seek out inspiration and tune into what’s speaking to you. It doesn’t mean your current wardrobe will become obsolete. It has more to do with styling what you have in new ways and adding excitement rather than basics, to spice things up and yup, add joy.
