Dearest Readers,
I’m posting my usual Thursday paid post on Wednesday this week in light of Thanksgiving. I cherish all my readers and I’m sorry to those of you who are upset when you hit the pay wall. I always publish one free post on the weekends and a paid post on Thursdays. As an independent stylist, I must earn at least a little income to justify the many hours a week I devote to publishing What Looks Good. I love sharing what I know with you and your wonderful comments keep me going. I hope you’ll stick around for more as paid or free subscribers.
To distinguish the two, my paid posts get more personal with more in depth styling advice including photos of myself in outfits I’ve styled to illustrate the concepts discussed. Paid subscribers can also message me with their specific style questions. My overall goal is not to encourage you to buy more clothes, but to help you curate your purchases to grow a wardrobe that is functional and unique to your own personal style while always pushing the needle forward. Buy better, buy less is my motto. I believe this approach saves money by consuming less, makes dressing easier, ups your style game and is environmentally responsible. One mistake purchase avoided more than covers a yearly subscription!
The Boots Saga
I broke my own rule and bought a pair of non-returnable boots because they were A: exactly what I wanted, and B: hella marked down. Buying anything that is not returnable is a dangerous game, particularly when it involves shoes. No matter the deal or the desirability of the shoes, all is moot if you can’t wear them because they kill on.
My right foot is problematic with a small but vocal bunion that lets me know when she’s unhappy. Let’s just say shoes have to get by her first. Despite this, I took the leap but not without due diligence in the form of visiting the Valentino store on Madison Avenue. They didn’t have the exact boots I was interested in but they did have the same boots with a higher heel. Good enough, if that could pass the test surely the lower heel would work out. I slipped the boots on and all was well with Righty. I ordered the boots having mitigated the biggest risk.
The boots arrived last week and I’m happy to report they’re perfect and super comfortable. Risk-reward high! As my regular readers know by now, I don’t take my purchases lightly. Anything I add must enhance my existing wardrobe and serve for years to come. I’m always playing the long game.
I wanted the boots to style with a slew of skirts that have been hanging in the hibernation closet for too long and seemed right again. Mainly, they came from my Carolina Herrera days where we dressed up for work. Heels, no kidding, were mandatory and the skirts got a lot of play. That’s not my life now. I’m running around and need mobility. Also the general vibe of fashion is much more relaxed. A black leather, knee high boot with a two inch heel would rid the skirts of that lady feel and afford mobility.
Here are the outfits with explanations on how I got there. I’ve also included coats with the looks because never forget; the coat is part of the outfit.
