Often the internet can be a black hole, sucking you down into its depth where space and time are suspended as you’re swept away into an alternate reality. Dramatic? Yes, especially since I’m referring to online shopping. For me a time sucker of epic proportions. But then there are the times when the stars align and you uncover a bounty of treasures and occasionally the greatest of all; rare gems on sale. You’re in the zone, the internet gods reward you for your perseverance and absurd investment of time. And that dear reader is what I aim to share with you. Like rainbows and unicorns, they are ephemeral. There’s no guarantee that rare gem you uncovered will be there when you return, credit card in hand.
Now I don’t advocate buying for the thrill of the hunt and the dopamine boost you get when you press purchase. All purchases should be part of a grander scheme; that of building a functional wardrobe and evolving your own personal style. It’s a simple and noble cause.
How do I reconcile these two opposing views you may wonder? It’s easy and it’s complicated; easy because I don’t buy random things. I have to first have an idea that grows to a yearning for a particular thing. It’s never the latest it bag or shoe but something inspired from an old photo, or a glimpse of someone on the street or something that has just been persistently rattling around in my head. I start to obsess about the thing and start fantasizing about it when I’m getting dressed. “If only I had X it would totally transform this look”. Practical use is established, now it’s time to hunt and if I’m lucky pull the trigger. Then it becomes easy. I want it, need it and I know how I’ll wear it.
