Hi friends,
I didn’t intend to make more sales recommendations, but there is just too much good stuff out there on sale for Memorial Day not to pass along to you. You don’t need much for summer; it truly is the season of less is more. The warmer weather requires less clothing, and packing light simplifies travel plans. Having the right summer essentials makes everything easier.
I’ll never forget the weekend, many summers ago, when a college friend of my then-husband and his French wife came to our beach house for a weekend. She was the epitome of French girl style; beautiful in that undone, minimal makeup, tousled hair kind of way. She arrived in the perfect tan cotton sun dress and espadrilles. I immediately made a mental note that I needed exactly that kind of dress. As the weekend wore on, she repeated that outfit several times. We were both young mothers, busy attending to our kids. She, quite sensibly, simplified dressing, unabashedly repeating the outfit. But the outfit was perfect, so why wear it only once? That is easy summer style in a nutshell.
That lesson in style stuck with me, it’s not how much you have, it’s having the right things that fit the life you’re living. I always keep that in mind when I’m making recommendations; uncover the pieces you’ll reach for again and again, and always feel good in.
Up Your Beach/Pool Game
If you spend time at the beach or pool, beach towels and a beach bag are essential. They should also reflect your overall on-the-water style. I just stumbled upon the New York based company Kassatex. What a find! They offer the most stylish beach towels I’ve seen anywhere, as well as great beach bags and so much more for the home. For Memorial Day, they’re offering 25% off all orders over $150.
From top, the Almalfi towel is in a superb range of colors. The reversible, Greek key pattern towel and the striped and tassled Cannes beach towel.
I love the idea of a robe as a cover-up. This striped robe in linen would work brilliantly. Any one of these bags would be indispensable all summer. The Palomino comes in three color combos, the Minka, also in three colors, is generously sized, and the Azie beach bag is now on sale.
Since I’ve been in Spain, not a day has gone by when I haven’t worn a cashmere sweater. Back home, I always bring at least one with me for weekends away. Jenni Kayne knows how to make the cashmere sweaters you can live in; simple and proportioned just right. This weekend, they’re offering 20% off many of their most popular styles. Any one of these you’ll love all summer and wear year-round. The Fisherman Crew, the Cocoon Cardigan, the Amelia Crew, which appears chunky, but the tubular yarn it’s knit in keeps it light and the perfect leather flip-flop in chocolate brown.
I love the quality and clean design of Co. It’s worth checking out their selection of 40% off Spring/Summer styles. A few of my favorites: the handknit crewneck in cotton, a voluminous white cotton blouse, and the perfect fine-gauge cashmere sweater.
COS is offering 30% off select styles with the code MDW30. I adore these angular cat-eye sunglasses, this jumpsuit looks like a dress, so chic in brown, this tee gives major Prada Spring 1996 vibes, and I’m certain I’d wear the hell out of this black cotton dress in town and out.
Last, I leave you with outfit inspiration for summer whites! Thanks for reading, and please share this post, like if you like it, and keep those comments coming. What are you looking forward to this summer? It’s all ahead of us, enjoy!
Happy summer to all!

Hi Francine, I'm so happy you enjoy WLG! I put many hours into the newsletter, and words of encouragement go a long way, so thank you! I'm with you, I never wear shorts and sneakers don't fly in Europe. Your trip sounds amazing. Barcelona is sprawling but very walkable. Since I've been in Spain, my favorite walking shoes have been my A Emory Sandals https://go.shopmy.us/p-18153970
They're very comfortable and look great with cropped pants as well as loose, long trousers in linen, and are sturdy enough to walk in all day comfortably. I also love these from Soeur, https://go.shopmy.us/p-18141251
similar in feel, and I love them in suede.
I'm also a big lover of espadrilles in the summer. I bought something similar to these in Madrid https://go.shopmy.us/p-18554584 and have been wearing them to dinner and also for walking, but any espadrille would work, except a high wedge if you're walking a lot. For outfits, one long loose midi dress in cotton would be nice for day and evening. Did you like the two COS ideas I presented today? Also, look at this recent post: https://whatlooksgood.substack.com/p/all-you-need-for-a-week-away. In it, I made a capsule collection for a week away. You could use it as a template and do check out Matteau, they know warm-weather style better than most.
Let me know if this helps. xo Jolain
I love everything about your newsletter! Your voice, your sensibilities, viewpoint and eye are so appreciated.
As a SoCal native who lives for fall/winter dressing, summer is always my ‘swing low’ period because I dislike the heat (I also never wear shorts). But I have a work trip to Vienna coming in late July. Right after, my husband and boys will meet me in Barcelona for a week holiday. I’d love some outfit ideas and suggestions on cute walking shoes that aren’t hideous sneakers or birks!
Thank you!
