To read this post in its entirety please click through, I’ve gone too long again!
I thought I was finished with transition jackets until I saw this suede jacket Cos just dropped. Despite my multiple recommendations in this category, I could not let this one go, it’s just too good. To drive the point home I’ve revisited my Functional Wardrobe Code. This time I’ve built six outfits around the jacket. With inspiration from street style and the ever-stylish Miuccia Prada, my mandate was also to add newness through new proportions and mixes.
When approaching a new season try to add pieces that don’t duplicate what you already have. Pay attention to the proportions. For example, this Cos jacket has a relaxed fit but is not too oversized. What makes it special is the suede is bonded to neoprene which gives the jacket extra body for a strong silhouette. I also love the color which mixes well with brights, pastels, and black and white. It’s roomy enough to work over layers while it’s chilly, or wear it over something slinky when it warms up. This is a forever piece that will keep on giving.
The slip dress is surprisingly versatile. It can stand on its own or can be treated as a skirt with the yellow cashmere sweater layered over it. Don’t be afraid to layer over your dresses. Experiment at home, multiple outfit options are hiding in your closet, I promise, though it works best with more unconstructed dresses. I also love the sleeveless cashmere turtle worn under the dress. Likewise, the black turtle can be worn under the yellow cashmere V-neck. Color is important when choosing the support pieces, they must work together to layer. The black of the sweater picks up on the black lace of the dress to join the two pieces. The yellow creates an interesting mix with the pale blue of the dress. I also like using the yellow sweater as an accent thrown over the shoulders or tied at the waist.
Worth noting: Many of my recommendations are currently on sale as part of the Saks Friend and Family Sale until March 25th.
I chose two white bottoms to add a lift after the long, dark winter and they will segue nicely into summer. I lean heavily into my white jeans for transition. This pair from Rag & Bone has a straight leg and relaxed fit, which is all I’m feeling for in jeans now. The color is off-white which blends nicely with the jacket. The cotton canvas skirt is from Vince. I chose it for the silhouette; clean at the top with fullness at the bottom. In summer it will look great with a flat sandal.
Inspired by the top look, I layered the dress under the V-neck sweater under the jacket. The black hose is key but I’m not buying into the white heels with black hose. A black slingback is essential, these from Roger Vivier are stunning. For a more affordable option try these. I added this great-looking scarf to the neck, to balance the look. I couldn’t resist this bag in pebble leather to compliment the jacket, currently on sale!
Here’s an easy everyday look for the chilly side of transition. I’m not putting my fall boots away just yet. I’ve been eying these black suede boots all season, finally on sale now. The belt is Nili Lotan, a classic and the sunglasses are Saint Laurent on sale.
No one works a skirt better than our queen of style Miuccia Prada. Taking my cues from her I paired a midi skirt with an easy V-neck sweater. This is a formula I’ve been enjoying all winter. The key is to pair a relaxed sweater (as opposed to a fitted one) with the skirt to make it feel new. I love this modern take on pearl earrings. Pearls are having a moment! I’m crazy about these metallic mules, they’re a forever shoe with personality!
The point I’m trying to drive home is to approach a new season by buying capsule collections. Perhaps you already own some of the pieces which is even better. Think in terms of outfit options for different scenarios and don’t make the mistake many make by continually buying the same type of things over and over again (trust me I see this happen all the time). The addition of a different kind of jacket, dress, or skirt silhouette can open up options and add newness to your wardrobe. Before taking the tags off of any new purchases do a styling session and always take pictures. Also, reach for new color combinations. It’s not about matching right now but mixing nuanced color combinations.
I hope this has been helpful. I’d love to hear what you think! If you’re interested in a styling session, remote or in-person (if you live in NYC) I have some openings before April 19th. If you have any questions please message or comment, I love hearing from you!
