Slip Into Something More Comfortable
Silk Pieces For The Femme Fatale In All Of Us, Just in Time For Valentine’s Day
Have you ever noticed how female characters in films and TV have the most amazing lingerie? They could be a detective, a school teacher, a stay-at-home mom, or a diva but damned if they don't all change into silky robes and loungewear at the end of the day. Their life may be imploding around them but it doesn’t keep them from serving a silky look for bedtime, picking from a seemingly endless well of expensive-looking lingerie for the inevitable bedtime scene (and different every single night!). Do real people live like that? I wish I did, I’m a solid 100% cotton menswear style pajama person. Have been for years. I’m beginning to think I’m missing out on one of the great pleasures of life. How chic to come home and slip into something more comfortable, as they used to say in old movies, only to come out in a sexy silk negligee and marabou trimmed silk robe. I think it could be life-changing! At the very least mind altering!
As much as I love silk, and I’m talking real silk, not synthetics pretending to be silk, my practical side always dismissed it as fully impractical. Who in their right mind would have dry clean only pajamas and undergarments? Now, that impediment seems to have miraculously vanished. Much of the silk I see lately is washable, even machine washable, on delicate in a laundry bag. Amazing! How divine to lounge at home in silk, just like the screen sirens we know and love.
I’ve been dying to write about this but decided to hold it just in time for Valentine's Day. I know what my Valentine's gift to me will be. For those of you with a significant other, send them this post. I’ve scoured online for the best-looking fully washable, totally chic, silk pieces to make staying in at night an art form.
I’ve devised four different types, who do you identify with? There are no wrong answers here!
Power Relaxing
She wears the pants in and out of the office. After a long day of keeping the world afloat, she needs a heavy dose of self-care in the form of impeccably tailored silk pajamas taken with an extra dry martini perhaps. If this sounds like you, I suggest any of these Olivia Von Halle pajamas. I’m partial to the sandwashed silk in pale blue with red piping. I also love the tonal print and the black and white stripe. The pink silk pajamas are a more affordable option but just as luxurious with many more colors available.
Mrs. Robinson
Who doesn’t adore the world-weary seductress Mrs Robinson? Anne Bancroft starred in The Graduate as an affluent, bored housewife of around 40. To lift her ennui, she seduces Benjamin, played by Dustin Hoffman, a recent college graduate and the son of her husband’s business partner. Forevermore, older seductresses are allied with Mrs. Robinson, even though Bancroft was only 35 at the time and smoking hot! That’s Hollywood. To my younger readers, if you haven’t seen this 1967 movie do so immediately. It’s a classic and also very stylish! For the Mrs. Robinson in all of us, I suggest this super-chic black body suit, also available in the perfect pink. You could pull a soon-to-be Mrs. Bezos and wear them under your blazer. No self-respecting Mrs. Robinson would be without a little leopard slip. How chic is this black bra in silk? Mrs. R would go for this sexy robe and nighty combo. Slips like this, or this were commonplace in 1967, I would love to see them make a comeback.
Welcome To My Garden
The garden is your passion. You selflessly toil all season to nurture beauty. Why not spread the glory of the garden indoors after dark? Swathe yourself in luxurious silks bursting with blooms and honor the earth goddess you are. Or forget all the labor, outsource, take all the credit, and pat yourself on the back for your prize-winning peonies with a wearable bouquet of silk. Either way, you win in this crimson floral robe. Giant roses on silk pajamas with a matching eye mask would guarantee a restful night’s sleep. Don’t love prints? A camisole with matching tap pants trimmed with floral lace also works.
The Good Sport
She’s up for anything and excels at every athletic endeavor she picks up. You would love to hate her but she’s just too good a sport for that. What’s the secret to her zen-like mastery of physical challenges? She relaxes like a champion in clean-cut silk pieces in shapes borrowed from the boys. Maybe you’ll never be as athletic as she is, but you can certainly relax with the best of them in this silk button-down with matching boxers or if you prefer a shirt and pant combo. This long robe is the perfect cut, or show off your toned legs with this short robe.

That Comme Si set is to die for! It has been in my list since forever, do you know if the quality is up to their high prices?
During covid I started treating myself to silk pajamas, since I wasn’t leaving the house. That eberjey set is my favorite. I’ve replaced it once (lots of wear), but it lasted a lot longer than more expensive brands. You’ve inspired me to branch out into slips and nightdresses now.
